TMJ Treatment & Nightguards in Riverview, FL
Waking up with a tight jaw, a headache, or teeth that look shorter than they used to? Grinding and clenching do their damage quietly, mostly while you sleep. At Omni Dental Studio, Dr. Ariana Merchi, DMD, evaluates your jaw and bite, makes custom nightguards that fit precisely, and starts with the most conservative treatment that will work.
How Do I Know If I'm Grinding My Teeth at Night?
Most people don't know, because it happens in their sleep. The clues show up in the morning or at the dentist: a sore jaw, a headache at the temples, or worn biting edges. If any of the signs below sound familiar, it's worth having your teeth and jaw checked.
A sore or stiff jaw on waking
Your chewing muscles worked overnight. Aching that eases by midday is a classic sign.
Morning headaches
Tension headaches at the temples often come from the muscles that close your jaw.
Flat, chipped, or shorter teeth
Enamel worn away by grinding doesn't grow back.
New tooth sensitivity
Thinning enamel exposes the more sensitive layer underneath.
Clicking, popping, or a jaw that catches
Noises or locking when you open can point to strain on the jaw joint.
Someone hears it
A partner hearing grinding at night is one of the most reliable clues.
Not sure if any of this applies to you? Read do I need a nightguard? — or simply mention it at your next checkup. Dr. Merchi looks for wear patterns, cracks, and jaw joint health at every exam.
Is a Custom Nightguard Worth It Over a Drugstore Guard?
For most people who grind, yes. A store-bought guard is shaped to fit everyone, so it tends to be bulky, shift around overnight, and get chewed through — some people even clench harder against it. A custom guard is built from impressions of your own teeth, so it stays put, feels thinner, and actually gets worn.
The process is simple. Impressions are taken in the office and sent to a dental lab, where your guard is made from durable acrylic. In about one to two weeks you come back for a fitting, and any pressure spots are adjusted before you take it home. With good care, a custom guard lasts for years.
A guard also protects crowns, veneers, and fillings you already have. If grinding has already worn or cracked a tooth, a crown can rebuild it — and the nightguard helps the repair last.
How Does a Dentist Treat TMJ Jaw Pain?
It starts with a careful evaluation of your jaw joints, muscles, and bite, then the gentlest treatment likely to help — a conservative, non-surgical approach first. Jaw pain can come from clenching, an uneven bite, an old injury, arthritis, or stress, often in combination, so the plan follows what your exam shows.
- A custom oral appliance. A splint or nightguard eases clenching pressure on the joint and supports a more comfortable jaw position.
- Bite adjustment, when it's needed. If uneven contacts are part of the problem, small refinements to how your teeth meet can take strain off the jaw.
- Jaw exercises. Stretching and strengthening the jaw muscles, coordinated with a physical therapist if that would help.
- Everyday habits. Stress management and softer foods during a flare-up can make a real difference.
Some symptoms that travel with TMJ problems, like ear pain, ringing in the ears, or poor sleep, can also have causes outside the mouth. If those are part of the picture, see your physician or an appropriate specialist as well.
TMJ & Nightguard FAQs
How long does it take to get a custom nightguard?
Usually one to two weeks from impressions to fitting, since each guard is made at a dental lab. Most people are used to sleeping in it within a few nights.
Will a nightguard stop me from grinding my teeth?
Not always — its main job is protection. The guard takes the grinding force so your teeth and dental work don't, and many people find their jaw and morning headaches ease too. Easing the habit itself means addressing what drives it, such as stress, sleep, or how your teeth meet. If you snore heavily or wake unrested, mention it to your physician too.
Does insurance cover nightguards or TMJ treatment?
It depends on your plan, so the office checks your benefits and gives you a clear cost estimate before treatment. Omni Dental Studio accepts most major PPO plans (not Delta Dental), takes HSA and FSA cards, and offers financing through CareCredit, Cherry, Sunbit, and HFD. Without insurance, the Smile Studio Club membership includes 20% off other services.
My teeth are already worn down. Can they be fixed?
Usually, yes. Minor chips can often be bonded, worn front teeth may suit veneers, and badly damaged back teeth may need crowns. Dr. Merchi recommends the most conservative option that will hold up, plus a nightguard so the repair isn't ground away too.
Do children grind their teeth, and do they need a nightguard?
Grinding is common in young children and often fades as the permanent teeth come in. If your child mentions jaw pain or you notice wear, bring it up at their next checkup — nightguards can be made for children when one is needed.
