Do I Need a Nightguard? Signs You Grind Your Teeth at Night

You likely need a nightguard if you wake with jaw soreness or dull headaches, your partner hears grinding at night, or your dentist sees flattened edges, chips, or cracks your daytime habits can't explain — all classic signs of bruxism, which most people do entirely in their sleep. A custom-fitted nightguard doesn't stop the grinding, but it absorbs the force so your teeth, and any dental work on them, stop paying for it.

The signs most people miss

Nighttime grinding is invisible to the person doing it, so the evidence is indirect: jaw muscles that feel tired or tight in the morning, temple headaches on waking, teeth that have grown subtly shorter or developed flat, matching edges, sensitivity from worn enamel, or scalloped marks along the sides of the tongue. Sometimes the first sign is a cracked filling or a chipped tooth with no story behind it.

Grinding forces are no joke — they can far exceed normal chewing pressure, applied for hours against teeth that were built for seconds of contact at a time. That's why bruxism quietly shortens the life of everything in the mouth: enamel, fillings, crowns, and veneers alike.

Why custom beats the drugstore boil-and-bite

A custom nightguard is made from an impression of your own teeth: it fits precisely, stays in place, distributes force evenly, and is built in a thickness matched to your grinding pattern. Boil-and-bite guards are bulky, shift at night, and some soft versions can actually encourage chewing. If a guard is uncomfortable, it ends up in the nightstand drawer — and a drawer guard protects nothing.

At Omni Dental Studio, bruxism signs are checked at every exam, and custom nightguards and TMJ treatment are part of the specialty services offered in the Riverview office. If jaw pain, clicking, or morning headaches sound familiar, mention them at your next visit — protecting teeth from grinding is far cheaper than rebuilding them afterward.
