What to Do If You Break a Tooth
If you break a tooth: rinse your mouth gently with warm water, save any pieces, apply a cold compress for swelling, avoid chewing on that side, and call a dentist the same day — a knocked-out permanent tooth is the true sprint, where reimplantation works best within the first hour.
First aid, in order
Rinse gently with warm water to clear debris. Find and save any broken pieces in a clean container — sometimes they can be bonded back. If there's bleeding, press clean gauze on the area for ten to fifteen minutes. A cold compress on the outside of the cheek limits swelling, and an over-the-counter pain reliever used as directed handles most discomfort. If a sharp edge is cutting your tongue or cheek, dental wax or even sugarless gum over the edge protects it until you're seen.
Avoid the tempting shortcuts: don't chew on the injured side, don't test the tooth against hot or cold, and don't glue anything yourself — household adhesives are toxic to the tooth and make professional repair harder.
The knocked-out tooth is different
A permanent tooth knocked completely out is the one genuine sprint in dentistry. Pick it up by the crown — never the root — rinse it briefly without scrubbing, and try to seat it back in the socket, holding it in place with gentle bite pressure on gauze. If that's not possible, keep it in milk (or held in your cheek if you're an adult and there's no other option) and get to a dentist immediately. Reimplantation succeeds best inside the first hour.
For a baby tooth knocked out, don't reimplant it — you can damage the adult tooth forming underneath. Call the dentist for guidance instead.
How fast you need to be seen
Same day for: a knocked-out or badly displaced tooth, a fracture that exposes pink or bleeding tissue inside the tooth, or pain and swelling. Within a couple of days for: a modest chip with mild sensitivity.
