Root Canals Don't Deserve Their Reputation: What to Expect
A modern root canal feels much like getting a large filling: the tooth is thoroughly numbed, the infected nerve tissue inside is removed, and the space is sealed — the procedure relieves the famous toothache pain rather than causing it. The reputation comes from decades-old techniques and from the pain of the infection itself, not from today's treatment.
What actually happens
Inside every tooth is a small chamber of nerve and blood vessels. When deep decay or a crack lets bacteria reach it, the tissue becomes inflamed and then infected — that's the throbbing, sleep-ruining toothache. A root canal removes the infected tissue through a small opening, disinfects the canals, and seals them. With modern anesthetic and techniques, most patients describe the appointment as uneventful and the following days as dramatically better than the days before it.
Afterward, a back tooth almost always needs a crown: a tooth without its internal blood supply becomes more brittle, and the crown protects it for the long haul. Plan for both steps when you plan the treatment — they're two halves of saving the same tooth.
The alternative is not 'wait and see'
An infected nerve doesn't heal. The realistic alternatives to a root canal are extraction — followed by the cost and time of replacing the tooth with a bridge or implant — or an untreated infection that spreads into the jaw and face. Saving your own tooth, when it can be saved, is almost always the cheaper and better path. Insurance typically treats root canals as major restorative care, covered at roughly 50% on most PPO plans after the deductible.
If you're having the classic warning signs — lingering pain with hot drinks, throbbing at night, a gum pimple that comes and goes — don't wait for the pain to decide for you. Root canal treatment is available at Omni Dental Studio in Riverview, with the exam, X-rays, and a written cost for every option before anything begins, and emergency appointments for the toothaches that won't wait.
